Christina McCallum Manager at Hutton Park Care Home in Largs

What inspired you to get involved in caring for the elderly?

I was working in insurance for 8 years and I felt that I needed to have a change of career and discussed this with my partner who had been working in the care sector for over 20 years - he suggested I apply for nursing at university.

I studied nursing at university for two years, during which time my father passed away and I rethought my career. I enjoyed many of my placements working in care homes and elderly wards and I always felt a connection so this encouraged me to get a job within the Elderly Care sector.

I worked locally with a care at home company which I enjoyed greatly and I worked my way up to becoming a line manager - I worked there for nearly 8 years. I then saw the deputy manager post at Hutton Park which I applied for and got the job. Over the last 7 months at Hutton Park I have gained experience in a different care setting which has been very interesting and it has enabled me to become the Care Home Manager of Hutton Park.

Tell me a bit about your approach and values – what’s important to you, your residents and your residents families?

Within my role as Manager I must adhere to the codes of conduct and Hutton Park's policies and procedures. Within my role I am responsible for 36 residents and their wellbeing. It is important for me to have good relationships with both the residents and their families, always be there to answer any questions and always help to resolve any issues the home may come across - I am always happy to help. Over the last 7 months I have built strong relationships with the residents and their families.

I wanted to work within a residential setting and it was great when the post for Hutton Park was advertised. I am always up for a challenge and I was keen to learn and to develop my career further. The challenges I have faced, I have enjoyed and I look forward to what lies ahead.

After a day at work I like to know that I have made a difference to our residents lives and carried out my duties to the best of my ability.

What do you like to do in your spare time?

I enjoy spending time with my family and relaxing after a hard (yet rewarding) week at work!
